Problem definition

The Natura 2000 network is the largest network of protected areas in the world. Spain is one of the countries with the highest percentage of its surface area included in this Network, with more than 138,000 km2 protected, i.e. a 12 % of the surface. The conservation of these areas is threatened by the risks associated with climate change, such as rising temperatures, rising sea levels and ocean acidification, which endanger habitats and species.

In this sense, the National Plan for Adaptation to Climate Change (PNACC) 2021-2030 includes the need for the development of tools for risk analysis and the definition of adaptation measures in these marine protected areas with the aim of guaranteeing their conservation under different climate change scenarios.

Solution

TheLIFE INTEMARES project “Integrated, innovative and participatory management of the Natura 2000 Network in the Spanish marine environment” is one of the largest marine conservation projects in Europe. It completes the work and progress made in the framework of the project LIFE+ INDEMARES.It aims to achieve a consolidated network of effectively managed marine areas, with the active participation of the sectors involved and with research as the basic tools for decision-making.

This action aims to respond to the needs set by current legislation and public policies related to climate change risks and adaptation, by carrying out a risk analysis using a specific methodology and the subsequent design of adaptation measures.

ICATALIST will be responsible for carrying out the climate change risk analysis and the design of adaptation measures in three of these areas:

  • in the ZEPA Espacio Marino de la Isla de Alborán and LIC Espacio Marino de Alborán,

  • in the ZEC Playas de Sotavento de Jandía

  • in the LIC Marismas de Odiel

The aim is to identify the most threatened and vulnerable habitats, species or areas at risk that require the implementation of adaptation measures to reduce the magnitude of the identified risk.

Concrete measures

The “Methodology for risk analysis of the protected areas of the Natura 2000 Network in the face of climate change”, developed within the framework of the LIFE INTEMARES project by the Institute of Environmental Hydraulics of Cantabria (IHAC), will be applied.
