European Innovation Action Group on River Restoration

Project information

European Innovation Platform Action Group on Water (EIP Water)

Work areas

River Restoration: Climate Resilience; Climate Change Adaptation Solutions; Innovation

In collaboration with

50 partners

Status

Finished in 2020

About the project

The vision and mission of the RiverRes Action Group is to provide a roadmap to address current policy challenges as opportunities for innovation through river restoration as an example of nature-based solutions. In particular, it focuses on how river restoration can increase the effectiveness of EU directives and related policy implementation.

RiverRes promotes projects that aim to reduce hydromorphological pressures and facilitate renaturation processes, thereby not only improving their ecological status, but also enhancing the provision of potential ecosystem services, under an integrated approach in the implementation of several EU Directives.

Concrete measures

Four lines of work were identified for the Task Force:

ICATALIST has been part of the action group since its creation in 2016, and has provided logistics and event organisation services to the group’s coordinator, the Confederación Hidrográfica del Duero (CHD).

To identify and evaluate the costs and benefits of river restoration projects, informing and facilitating decision making, as well as the implementation and monitoring of restoration measures.

Act as a think tank for citizen participation and communication in river restoration to identify barriers to the implementation of river restoration projects, help identify appropriate tools, incentives and strategies to overcome them and involve stakeholders at all stages (design, implementation and monitoring).

Test and demonstrate these tools, applying them to specific river restoration projects at demonstration sites in what we call RiverRes Living Labs, located in different European countries.

The last action focuses on knowledge sharing and capacity building, in particular with the tools developed by the Department of Field Support.
