The LIFE Integrated RBMP-Duero project focuses on the Medina del Campo groundwater body (MAS) in the south-central part of the Duero river basin. This project aims to prevent further deterioration and achieve good status of water bodies in order to meet water needs and mitigate the adverse effects of extreme hydrometeorological events and the increasing impact of climate change, while preserving the conservation status of rivers and wetlands as key habitats for biodiversity enhancement.
Within this context, ICATALIST in a first step designed and applied a system for assessing the water sustainability and greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions of the project, which facilitates the implementation of the River Basin Management Plan through the development and application of sustainable and integrative approaches. In a second block of work, a Climate Change Mitigation and Adaptation Plan for the MAS Medina del Campo area was developed and co-designed, which is updated and aligned with the existing climate and policy framework. In a final block, the importance of the circular economy to achieve current sustainability objectives was analysed, including the opportunities and challenges it presents and some concrete examples of application in the rural area and the LIFE IP-Duero project area, as well as other examples transferable to the study area. This includes the example of the use of treated water for irrigation in the area of the MAS Medina del Campo.
The research and actions proposed in this work are of great importance as they are transferable to other national and/or European areas with similar environmental, climatic and socio-economic challenges.
