Restoration of vegetation cover in areas of special environmental protection in Madrid, Segovia, Valencia and Albacete

Problem definition

The project continues the initiative called “One Million Trees” which began in 2002 with the aim of restoring the vegetation cover due to the growing desertification in Spain, carrying out reforestation in areas of special environmental protection in Madrid, Segovia, Valencia and Albacete. After achieving the proposed objectives, the project was renamed “Two million trees”, extending to 13 Autonomous Communities and reaching the figure of 1,269,000 trees planted on a total of 2,339 hectares.

Services

ICATALIST was the company in charge of the initial study and participates in supporting the entire process of forestry actions “ReforestaAcción – Sierra del Rincón”, including the planning of the actions, and its link with corporate volunteering for BANKIA employees, as well as the preparation of the final report.

Solution

In 2018, the Montemadrid Foundation reformulates this line of action with “ReforestaAcción”, a project that focuses on carrying out a series of actions to improve the forest masses that take into account the social, economic and environmental reality of the environment and that favours the participation of all the actors involved. The project starts with a study based on ecosystem services, the objective of which is to identify the most relevant areas for reforestation, as well as the most appropriate species and reforestation methodologies taking into account these considerations.

The first actions within the project are proposed after having identified the Sierra del Rincón as a priority area for action, a result based both on the environmental conditions of the area, determined through cartographic analysis, and on the socio-economic conditions, known through the participation of experts and local agents involved.

The land on which action is being taken is located in the municipalities of Prádena del Rincón and La Hiruela, in the north-eastern part of the Madrid region, in the Sierra Norte region. The species chosen are intended to be native and representative of the area, being interesting from an ecological, landscape and informative point of view.

With “ReforestaAcción – Sierra del Rincón” we take another step towards the objective of the “ReforestaAcción” project: To take care of the forests so that they take care of our future.
