Merlin

Promote ecological restoration of freshwater-related ecosystems on a large scale.

Project information

Horizon2020 project
Funded by the EU

Work areas

Large-scale restoration of freshwater-related ecosystems, and nature-based solutions (SbN)

In collaboration with

WWF Hungary, The James Hutton Institute, insurance industry representatives.

Status

Finishes in October 2025

Problem definition

Europe’s environment is in an alarming state and climate change is expected to further aggravate the situation. This poses serious threats to economic prosperity, human welfare and social peace: our society needs systemic transformational change.

Ecosystem restoration is key to this change, and freshwaters play an important role: the restoration of streams, rivers, peatlands and wetlands has a long tradition and offers a broad knowledge base: freshwaters are the ideal demonstrators of the necessary change.

Services

  • Organisation and moderation of round tables with representatives of the insurance industry.
  • Data collection through literature review or interviews
  • Identification of new models of insurance and investment in catering with the insurance industry

The final product will be a roadmap that includes an action plan for the promotion of NbS use and large-scale refurbishment by the insurance sector.

Solution

MERLIN will demonstrate best practices in freshwater restoration; implement innovative BNS at landscape scale; scale systemic restoration by leveraging green growth and private investment opportunities; normalise restoration through co-development with local communities and economic sectors; multiply transformative restoration solutions for key actors of systemic change. MERLIN will capitalise on successful freshwater restoration projects across Europe. ICATALIST is involved in defining and driving transformation processes in relation to the insurance sector.
