Flood risk reduction through the use of nature-based solutions

The programme aims to develop a common vision for safe and resilient river basin management strategies that would be co-designed and accepted by local stakeholders. Through a multi-sectoral and multi-stakeholder dialogue and participatory process, the programme supports local knowledge sharing through capacity building activities and facilitates a common understanding of the benefits of NBI in local contexts. The end result will be pre-feasibility/feasibility reports that would define the NBI projects to be implemented in local contexts to address recurrent flooding.
Climate change, extensive urbanisation, poor land management and massive habitat loss are increasing the risk of flooding in Greece and Cyprus (e.g. flash floods, pluvial floods and coastal flooding). Local authorities often lack specialist knowledge, awareness and technical capacity on how to identify and finance effective nature-based infrastructure (NBI) for flood risk reduction. Our challenge now is to influence and enable public authorities to renaturalise or protect natural catchments, to improve resilience and enhance biodiversity, rather than deepening scars on natural landscapes through the use of grey infrastructure.
Nature-Based Infrastructure (NBI) is a planned or managed (often designed) infrastructure, natural or semi-natural system designed to meet a specific need. In addition to providing the required function, NBI can provide more categories of co-benefits, compared to traditional grey infrastructure. This project empowers the public sector, private actors and communities to renaturalise water catchments by creating a ‘Nature for Catchment Launchramp’, for viable NBI projects, which demonstrates the WHAT, WHY and HOW to develop and finance catchment renaturation to mitigate recurrent flood damage.
