Urban Waterbuffer

Innovation project for adaptation to climate change in the Zorrilla Stadium in Valladolid.

Project information

Innovation grant from the Dutch government (Partners for Water Programme).

In collaboration with

Valladolid City Council, Aquavall, FieldFactors

Status

Finished in 2022

Problem definition

The city of Valladolid, like many other cities in Spain, is vulnerable to the impacts of droughts and heavy rains. Both phenomena have negative consequences, such as increased risk of flood damage, higher maintenance costs for urban infrastructure and impacts on ecosystems.

Solution

Valladolid’s stadium will soon use rainwater to irrigate its sports fields, while also offering asolution to minimise flooding in this area of the city. URBAN WATERBUFFER is a project of innovation for climate change adaptation with rainwater harvesting that could lead the city of Valladolid to become an example for sustainable urban water management in Spain.

The UWB project will collect rainwater from the paved area around the stadium, which will be treated by a natural filter, stored in the aquifer and used in times of drought. This will increase the resilience of the hydrological system, improving the urban environment around the stadium for the enjoyment of the people of Valladolid.

Concrete measures

Implementation of nature-based solutions, in particular a rainwater collection system around the Zorrilla stadium in Valladolid, with a green filter and aquifer storage for subsequent irrigation of its sports fields. In addition, it will increase the resilience of the hydrological system and serve to mitigate the effect of flooding and improve the urban environment around the stadium.
